As the world begins to consider plans for the recovery of the global economy, there is recognition that we have an opportunity to ‘build back better’.
Advance.org and the Embassy of Australia, Washington DC have invited a panel of global leaders including Anthony Pratt, Robyn Denholm, Andrew Liveris AO and Pamela Melroy to join Australia’s Ambassador to the United States, the Hon. Arthur Sinodinos AO, in a conversation about building resiliency and seizing opportunities in Advanced Manufacturing. The conversation will be hosted by Advance.org Chairman Yasmin Allen and facilitated by Advance.org CEO, Maria MacNamara.
Australia has important decisions to make. With almost a million Australians unemployed or underemployed as a result of the pandemic, we need to examine those sectors that can stimulate growth, unlock the talent and ingenuity of our people and create the variety of jobs needed to support the new economy in a Covid-19 constrained world.
The conversation will focus on critical issues including the need to transform established organisations and supply chains, particularly in a post-COVID-19 world.
We will also examine the importance of scaling of high growth enterprises globally, such as those producing autonomous vehicles and the need to stimulate the launch of new businesses, such as those unlocking the opportunities in space. We will discuss the data and technology that underpins the success of new economy organisations and the opportunities available for Australian entrepreneurs.

Speakers
Our host will be Advance.org Chairman Yasmin Allen. Yasmin is the Chairman of Advance, a non-executive director at ASX Limited, a director of Cochlear Limited and Santos Limited. Yasmin is also a Director of the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and a member of the board of The George Institute for Global Health, a medical research and commercialisation group. Her previous directorships include IAG Limited, EFIC and she is the former Chairman of Macquarie Group’s Global Infrastructure Funds. Yasmin had an extensive career in investment banking, including as Vice President of Deutsche Bank, Director of ANZ Investment Bank in Sydney and Director with HSBC in London. Yasmin has a Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University and in 2015 was awarded the Melbourne University Alumni of Distinction.
Joining Yasmin will be Australia’s Ambassador to the United States, the Hon. Arthur Sinodinos AO. Ambassador Sinodinos was previously Australia’s Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science and was a Senator for New South Wales in the Australian Parliament from 2011 to 2019. During his parliamentary career, he also held other key roles in and outside Cabinet, including Cabinet Secretary and Assistant Treasurer. Over a career spanning four decades, Ambassador Sinodinos has dedicated his professional life to the advancement of Australia and its people. On the election of the Hon. John Howard AC as Prime Minister of Australia in 1996, Ambassador Sinodinos was appointed the Prime Minister’s Senior Economic Adviser and in 1997, the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, a position he held for nine years.
Global leaders
We will be joined by Founding Patron of Advance.org and Executive Chairman of Visy Industries and Pratt Industries, Anthony Pratt. He graduated from Monash University, Melbourne, with a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) and joined McKinsey & Co, before joining Visy. In 1988, Mr Pratt became Deputy Chairman of Pratt Industries; three years later, he moved to the United States to lead the company’s expansion. Over the next 15 years, Pratt Industries grew 15-fold in sales and earnings, through greenfield initiatives and the acquisition of several corrugated manufacturing companies which now form the heart of Pratt Industries. Company revenues grew from US$100 million in 1991; and by 2015 revenue was US$ 2 billion. During that same period, Pratt Industries grew from the 46th largest corrugated box producer in the U.S. to the 5th largest. It is the only major paper company that is 100% recycled.
Pamela Melroy, Director of Space Technology and Policy at Nova Systems. Pamela Melroy is a retired Air Force test pilot and former NASA astronaut and Space Shuttle commander. Colonel Melroy retired from the Air Force in 2007, and left NASA in August 2009. After NASA, she served as Deputy Program manager for the Lockheed Martin Orion Space Exploration Initiatives program and as Director of Field Operations and acting Deputy Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation at the Federal Aviation Administration. She went on to serve as Deputy Director, Tactical Technology Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Pam Melroy is now a Non-Executive Director of Australian high growth company Myriota, the world leader in low-cost and low-power satellite connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT).
Andrew N. Liveris is the former Chairman and CEO of The Dow Chemical Company and Director of DowDuPont. He served as Executive Chairman of DowDuPont. A global business leader with more than 42 years at Dow, Liveris advocates the criticality of manufacturing worldwide. Mr Liveris is the author of ‘Make It in America’ and was tapped by the current U.S. Administration to help identify new ways to spur innovation, revitalise U.S. manufacturing sector and drive economic growth. He served as Co-Chair of President Obama’s Advanced Manufacturing Partnership steering committee and is a member of the U.S. President’s Export Council. Mr Liveris was named Senior Advisor to Saudi Arabian Governments Sovereign Wealth Fund, PIF. He sits on the Board of Directors of IBM, Worley Parsons and Saudi Aramco, on the advisory board of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and NEOM.
Robyn Denholm is the Chairman of Tesla. Robyn Denholm has served as a director since August 2014 and as Chair since November 2018. Ms. Denholm was Chief Operations Officer of Telstra Corporation Limited, a telecommunications company. Prior to Telstra, she was with Juniper Networks, Inc., a manufacturer of networking equipment, serving first as its Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and then as its Executive Vice President and Chief Financial and Operations Officer. Ms. Denholm served in various executive roles at Sun Microsystems, Inc., Toyota Motor Corporation Australia and at Arthur Andersen. Ms. Denholm was also a director of ABB Ltd. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Sydney and a Master’s degree in Commerce from the University of New South Wales.
Facilitator
The discussion will be facilitated by Maria MacNamara, CEO of Advance.org. Maria has expertise in policy, politics, professional services and digital transformation. She spent 30 years working in the professional services sector with legal and consulting firms. Maria was an adviser to the Hon. Arthur Sinodinos AO, and was head of Strategy and Engagement at the Digital Transformation Agency within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. She was head of Strategy and Policy at WIRO in the NSW Government and now sits on the board of the Spark Festival and IWF (Australia). Maria is an Advisory Council Member of the Future Minds Accelerator. She is also the inaugural Convenor of the Australian Innovation Council and a founding member of the Montessori Children’s Foundation. Maria was recognised in the 2018 International Women’s Day Showcase and is the winner of the Startcon Australasian Community Most Valuable Person Award in 2018.
